Choosing a Provider That Feels Right

Confident person meeting with a service provider

Choosing a disability support provider isn’t just a box to tick. It’s about finding someone who will back you up, not just for now, but for the long run.

More than a list of services

When you look at provider websites, they all tend to say the same things:

8 things to check before choosing a disability support provider

Are they NDIS registered — or do you want unregistered flexibility?
Do their workers have current NDIS Worker Screening Checks?
Do they offer a trial or meet-and-greet before you commit?
Is the service agreement clear about notice periods and cancellations?
Can they match you with a consistent worker — not a different face each week?
Have they worked with people who have similar needs to yours?
Are their rates at or below the NDIS Price Guide cap?
Do they listen to you — or talk at you?
  • We’re caring
  • We’re reliable
  • We’re person-centred
  • We’re proudly NDIS registered (or proudly independent)

The thing is, you’ve heard that before. And for some people, it didn’t turn out that way. So how do you know you’re choosing the right one?

What actually matters

At Heartfelt Support, we believe that good support starts with good connection. Not perfection, but consistency. Support that turns up, listens, and grows with you.

We’re not here to dazzle you at the first meeting. We’re here to show up again next week, when it’s raining, when your cat won’t come out from under the couch to go to the vet, and your support worker has another client straight after. Because that’s when real person-centred care happens.

A real example of flexible thinking

One of our participants had a plan that included funding for just one therapy. The goals pointed to sessions with a social worker, but what she really wanted was horse therapy. It felt like a choice between doing what the plan said, or doing what felt meaningful.

So we combined both. She now attends horse sessions led by a qualified social worker on our team, ticking the goal boxes and building her confidence in a way that truly works for her.

That kind of flexibility only happens when a provider is willing to think creatively, and to really listen.

We’re in it for the long haul

“The first two clients we ever supported on our first day of business — they’re still with us today.”

Robert Godden, Managing Director, Heartfelt Support

We’re not interested in being the flashiest provider in town. We’re interested in being the one you can count on, through the good days and the ones that don’t go to plan.

Things to consider when choosing a provider

Providers who promise perfectionProviders who offer honest, flexible solutions
Big buzzwords but little detailReal examples, stories, and evidence of outcomes
All talk, no follow-throughTeams who’ll go the distance, not just the intake meeting

Questions worth asking

When you’re comparing providers, it helps to go beyond the brochure. Here are a few things worth asking directly:

  • What happens if my regular worker is sick or leaves?
  • How do you match workers to participants?
  • What does your feedback or complaints process look like?
  • Can I try the support before committing to a longer arrangement?

A good provider will answer these questions without hesitation. A great provider will have already thought about them before you asked.
