Ensuring LGBTQI+ Inclusivity in Disability Support Services

Diverse and inclusive community gathering showing LGBTQI+ pride and support

Good disability support serves everyone. That sounds obvious — but in practice, it requires deliberate attention. For LGBTQI+ people with disability, the experience of navigating support services can involve additional layers of complexity: questions about whether to disclose, whether to trust, and whether the people supporting them will actually understand who they are.

At Heartfelt Support, LGBTQI+ inclusivity isn’t a policy document sitting in a drawer. It’s something we actively work at, because our clients deserve to receive support from people who see them fully.

The reality of intersectionality

The intersection of disability and LGBTQI+ identity presents a specific set of challenges. People who identify across both can face multiple forms of discrimination, misunderstanding, and marginalisation — sometimes from service providers who mean well but haven’t thought carefully about what inclusive support actually requires.

Recognising this isn’t enough on its own. It requires actively building an environment where LGBTQI+ clients feel not just tolerated, but genuinely seen and supported.

Inclusive policies as a foundation

Heartfelt Support’s inclusivity policies explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. But policies are only as useful as the practice they inform. Ours are designed to shape everything from how we interact with clients to how we hire and how we collaborate with other organisations.

The goal isn’t compliance — it’s maintaining a standard of care and respect for everyone we work with.

Staff training and education

Hiring people with the right values is a good start. Ongoing education is what sustains it. Our team participates in diversity and inclusion training that covers LGBTQI+ history, the range of identities within the community, and how to identify and address unconscious bias in support work.

This isn’t about ticking boxes. It’s about equipping our team with the understanding they need to provide genuinely good care for every client — including clients whose identity and experience may differ significantly from their own.

Community engagement

Inclusion requires listening, not just implementing. Heartfelt Support actively engages with local LGBTQI+ organisations and communities, attending events and seeking feedback on our service delivery. The goal is to make sure what we offer actually reflects the needs of the people we’re serving — not just what we assume those needs are.

Inclusive practice in everyday support

The practical details matter. We use clients’ preferred pronouns. Our intake processes are designed to be sensitive to gender identity and sexual orientation. We work to make sure every person who comes to Heartfelt feels comfortable being honest about who they are and what they need.

These aren’t large gestures. They’re the routine, consistent things that accumulate into a support environment where LGBTQI+ clients can actually be themselves.

An ongoing commitment

LGBTQI+ inclusivity isn’t a project that finishes. It’s a continuous process of learning, improving, and staying honest about where the gaps are. We’re committed to that process — not because it’s a good look, but because every person who comes to us for support deserves to be cared for as a whole person.
